I figured it’d been a while since I’ve done Kyle’s portraits… time for an update.

Last week, I gave myself an extra-awesome birthday present. I attended a workshop for wedding photographers put on by the amazing Fer Juaristi, a self-proclaimed “Mexican ninja” with a killer visual style and a unique, raw aesthetic. From the get-go, Fer’s sense of humour and contagious enthusiasm had me hooked. He shared everything about his business with us, from his inspiration and personal philosophies, to handy in-the-field tricks. I think one of the most important things I took away from my time with Fer was an ability to portray love and connections in totally new and unconventional ways… that sometimes creating tension within a photograph can be even more effective at suggesting love than an obvious cuddle or kiss. Allowing the viewer to ask questions, to wonder, to think… these are admirable goals for a wedding photographer. If you ever get a chance to attend a Fershop, I would highly recommend it :)

Just a little 2011 wrap up… better late than never, right?! This past year I had the good fortune to work with some amazing clients, and I am so thankful to all of you for allowing me into your lives during your most important moments. It truly is an honour to capture these images for you. Although they may change tomorrow (it’s so hard to choose!), here are a few of my favourite shots from last year. :)

There are few words to express how much I love this little growing family. Jen has been a constant in my life since the age of 7, and we have managed to remain close despite physical distances. I consider myself extremely blessed to have this strong, inspiring, and goofy presence in my life, no matter where we find ourselves.

Four weeks before we created these photos, Jen & Brent welcomed a baby boy into the world- Noah. A beautiful little brother for Thea. Maybe the world’s most beautiful, actually. These amazing parents somehow gathered up all the necessary travel documents, arranged for flights out of San Diego, and traveled together with their newborn & preschooler to be in Victoria for the holidays- all less than 2 weeks after Noah’s birth. I told you Jen is inspiring! Lucky for us they made it safely, and we were able to set aside a day for a few newborn & family photos.

Much love to you four… so happy to spend some time with you during your visit! xo

I love gifts that elicit tears… gifts that move people, remind them of how much they are loved, bring people closer. So when Thomas contacted me about this session for his parents & his cousins’ parents, I was thrilled to be a part of it… a gift from the younger generation to the older. And from what I heard, this gift definitely brought on a couple of tears… such an awesome idea!

As our shoot around Lonsdale Quay unfolded, it became plain to see that these 2 families love to laugh and be in eachother’s company. I always find it fascinating to see the resemblances between family members – can you tell who belongs to who in these photos? Pretty clear, I think!

Thank you so much to all of you for being yourselves and bringing your love & laughter to this session… I absolutely loved creating these portraits with you!

“I can’t imagine my life without Izzy…” At a mere 4 months of age, Isabel has already carved a significant spot on the hearts of her adoring parents. How amazing it is to see someone you love so completely happy.

Nicky & I have been friends since what feels like the dawn of time, when riding backwards in her parents’ station wagon was one of life’s greatest pleasures. It was only a few months ago that I was able to squeeze in a mini maternity session with her & Dave… and now that Isabel is here, I have witnessed a new kind of joy & radiance take shape within my friend. Truly beautiful.

Nicky & Dave – thanks for creating these pre-xmas portraits with me… I am so excited to be able to watch Izzy grow up. Much love to the 3 of you… xo

what an awesome weekend… gorgeous winter sunshine, a visit with the family in victoria, and i had the pleasure of meeting this little cutie and his lovely parents, sandra & stephen. :)

while we meandered around sandra & stephen’s neighbourhood park, we chatted about families, the sleepless lives of new parents, and that perfect laid back energy victoria does so well. 4 month old jonathon won me over right away with his adorable cooing and huge blue eyes – they are amazing! we were lucky to have such a beautiful sunny morning for our session – love it when everything comes together like that. thanks very much for sharing your morning with me, you three… it was so great to meet you!

After this adorable family session, I can safely say that 2 is my most favourite age… at least to photograph ;) Adelaide’s expressions & energy were so much fun to capture – there is nothing more precious than the sound of her hysterical giggling!

It had been about a year & a half since I had last visited Jessica & Brandon for a portrait session, so this was the perfect time to update their family photos. What an honour it is to be there as this little family grows up… so much love and laughter between them. Plus they own one of the nicest & most affectionate golden retrievers I have ever met, the lovely Baylee girl. :)

Thanks, Jess & Brandon, for a great visit, and for having me continue to document your sweet little girl. Can’t believe how quickly she has grown! Lots of love. xo
