When photographing families and kids especially, I like to take a candid, documentary approach and sprinkle in a few more posed shots. The traditional photos of everyone looking at the camera have their place, but I believe the true essence of a family lies in the connections between each person. This is what is most important and what I strive to capture in your portrait session!
To document your family as authentically as possible, I will ask you to think about locations that have meaning to you. Where do you hang out? Maybe a favourite beach, like the family below chose, or a cafe, or a special hiking trail. From here we will craft a custom portrait session around that place & what you like to do together. Of course, if you have a tough time coming up with location ideas, I have a few favourites too and would be happy to help with suggestions!
This family decided to mark Dad’s birthday with a surprise photo session near their home in Victoria. He had no idea that their usual “walk & picnic” would turn into family portraits with a professional photographer! I loved this idea and was so happy to help mark the occasion for them. We explored the beach a bit, took a short stroll, and embraced the crazy winds & stormy clouds that day… I honestly wish it was this windy more often – love the results! Here are a few favourites from their session. xo
